Rush Springs church of Christ Rush Springs, OK

Who We Are And What We Beleive
Does it really even matter who we are or what we believe? Absolutely! We are an independent, nondenominational congregation unapologetically devoted to the practice of the teachings of Jesus Christ. Although we have no creed other than the Bible itself, there are several biblical teachings detailed below that will help you understand why we preach and practice the things we do. We want to pass on what we believe in a simple, yet concise way, so you know exactly what we believe as a church. We are open to worshippers of all ages and backgrounds, and strive to lead all who worship with us towards a deeper love for God. Please see below for more about what we believe.

We Believe Jesus is the Son of God
The teachings of the New Testament are centered on Jesus Christ himself. He is the Son of God, who became a man to lead us back to God and to pay the price for our sins. He is the only way for anyone to be saved. (Acts 4:12)

A Plea for Unity and Uniformity
Our faith heritage is part of a “Restoration Movement.” The driving principle of this movement is to “restore” the teaching and practices given to the first Christians by Christ and His inspired apostles and prophets. The first churches were all taught the same beliefs and practices, because the teachings all came from the Holy Spirit of God through inspired men. The New Testament writers appealed to all Christians to embrace the same teachings.

The Lord’s Supper
This is the memorial that Jesus established on the evening before His death. New Testament examples show that the Lord’s Supper was taken regularly so we offer the communion (as it is also called) in our worship each Sunday.

Singing
Unaccompanied “a cappella” singing is the only music used in our worship. This has been the practice of most believers during most of Christian history. In fact, the Latin phrase “a cappella” means “like the church.” (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 14:15)

Organization
Jesus is the Head of His one church (Ephesians 1:22, 4:4), ruling through the teachings of the apostles in the New Testament. (Ephesians 2:20). In keeping with the New Testament description of the churches established by the apostles, we believe the local church should be led by a group of biblically qualified shepherds (also called elders or bishops) and served by a group of biblically qualified deacons. Evangelists, whom we support locally and around the world, preach and teach the word of God.

The Bible Only
The Bible is the inspired Word of God. In particular, the teachings of the New Testament are the only authority for our faith, our worship, our work together, and our daily lives. (John 14:23) Historically, creeds have been used to define the boundaries of subgroups within Christianity. We appeal for unity based on the teachings of the Bible alone.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The Bible

We believe the Bible to be the revealed Word of God, fully and verbally inspired by God.  We believe the Scriptures to be the inerrant, infallible Word of God, as found within the 66 books from Genesis to Revelation.  We believe God not only inspired every word but has preserved them through the ages.  We believe the King James Version is the preserved Word of God for the English-speaking people.

Psalm 12:6-7; II Timothy 3:15-17; I Peter 1:23-25; II Peter 1:19-21

Jesus

We believe Jesus Christ to be the one and only Saviour of mankind.  We believe Jesus Christ to be eternally God and to possess all the attributes of Deity.  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was virgin-born, that He was God incarnate, and that the purposes of the incarnation were to reveal God, to redeem men, and to rule over God’s kingdom.  We believe Jesus Christ never relinquished any attributes of His Deity but merely veiled them.  We believe He lived a perfect, sinless life, at the end of which He was offered for all mankind as a substitutionary sacrifice for man’s sin.  This sacrifice was a just payment to God for the forgiveness of sin.  It was activated by His death through the shedding of His blood on the Cross and was accepted by God upon His resurrection.  We believe He ascended into Heaven after His resurrection to be seated at the right hand of the Father, waiting for the time of the Rapture, and returning seven years later to earth to rule and reign as King for 1,000 years.

Psalm 2:7-9; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6, 43:11; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:25; Luke 1:26-35; John 1:1, 1:3, 14, 18, 29; Romans 3:19-25; Romans 5:6-15; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 Timothy 3:16; Titus 2:10-15; Hebrews 7:26, 9:24-28; 1 Peter 1:19, 2:2; 1 John 1:3; Revelation 20:1-6

God

We believe that God is a Person, eternally existing, as a Trinity in unity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit – three Persons, yet one God.

Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 26:19; I Corinthians 8:6; I John 5:7

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person; equal with God the Father and God the Son.  We believe it is the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin, of judgment, and of righteousness, and that He is the agent in the New Birth, and that He seals, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies, and helps the believer.

Genesis 1:13; Matthew 3:11; 28:19; Mark 1:8; Luke 1:35; 3:16; 24:49; John 1:33; 3:5-6; 14:16-17,26; 15:26-27; 16:8-11,13; Acts 5:30-32; 11:16; Romans 8:14,16,26-27; Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:7; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 1:2

Sin

Mankind was created in the image of God but fell through sin, bringing not only physical death but also spiritual death or eternal separation from God.  Now all of mankind exists as a fallen race with an inherited sinful nature.

Genesis 2:16, Genesis 3:16-19, Romans 3:10-23, Romans 6:23

Salvation

We believe that the blessings of salvation are available to everyone by grace through faith, but that they only come to those who are willing to repent (have a total change of mind concerning their sinful condition and inability to change it) and place their faith and trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

John 3:15-18, 36; Acts 20:21; Romans 3:21-22; Romans 10:9-10, 13; Ephesians 2:8-9

The Church

We believe the church began with the calling out of the twelve apostles by Jesus Christ and was empowered on the day of Pentecost.  We believe the local church is God’s only institution to carry out His work today.  We believe the local church is composed of members who have been saved and baptized according to the command of Christ, and have voluntarily united together for the purposes of worship, fellowship, service, and the observance of the Lord’s Supper.

Matthew 16:16-18; 28:19-20; Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-30

End-Time Events

We believe in the pre-tribulational Rapture of the church saints, followed by the seven-year Tribulation.  We believe in the pre-millennial return of Christ to the earth and His literal rule of one thousand years.  Following this one thousand years is the Great White Throne judgment and then the new Heaven and new earth.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9; Revelation 19-22

The Ordinances

We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.  We believe baptism is administered by the authority of the local church and is the door to church membership and a prerequisite to participating in the observance of the Lord’s Supper.  We believe the Lord’s Supper is a sacred ordinance in which the members of the local body remember the Lord’s death by partaking of the unleavened bread and fruit of the vine, always preceded by solemn self-examination.

Matthew 3:6; 3:16; 28:19-20; John 3:23; Acts 2:41-42; 8:36-39; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-28; Colossians 2:12
